BEFORE YOU WERE BORN

Recipient of Princeton University’s 2022 University Center for Human Values (UCHV) Short Film Prize, Honorable Mention

BEFORE YOU WERE BORN is a short documentary film in dialogue with Chantal Akerman’s work from the 1970s, particularly News From Home (1977), La Chambre (1972), and Je Tu Il Elle (1974). Through the framework of discussing the semiotic, cultural, and gendered implications of darkness and light, the film indexes the temporal, spatial, corporeal, and emotional distances between mother and son.
